Emetrece Productions was founded as an audio-visual hip-hop production company in 2003. The name Emetrece originated many years earlier in 1991 as a nom d' plume for anonymous publications by Melisa Riviere, written out as M13, reminiscent of a weapon title. Melisa's name containing 13 letters and with the initials MR could be scripted in such a way to appear as an M13. After substantial trafficking of M13 authorship, the name was altered to Emetrece so as to identify with Melisa’s Latina origin and target the Latin community. The word strategically includes 4 letters ‘E,’ each of which relates to an element of hip-hop – DJ, graffiti art, break dance, and lyricism/rap. Emetrece Productions offers a unique fifth element of audio-visual historical documentation represented by film in the fifth circle of the logo. Today Emetrece Productions is a professional Latin hip-hop audio-visual production company offering (1) high school through university educational curriculum & lectures; (2) music album & video publishing; (3) documentary & music video direction/production; and (4) event organization. The mission of Emetrece Productions is to bridge education with entertainment, using hip-hop as a tool for reflection on social, political, racial, gendered and class divisions, in order to further unity amongst diverse communities. Past, present and future projects under Emetrece Productions include Maria Isa: "M.I. Split Personalities," Ritmos Unidos: An Afro-Latin Tribute to MLK Day, Son Dos Alas - Anónimo Consejo feat. Tego Calerón, Guasábara - SieteNueve feat. Magia, Sin Permiso - Los Aldeanos & Intifada, Anthropology of Hip-Hop and much more. Melisa, Founder and president/producer of Emetrece Productions has specialized her hip-hop audio & visual production work in Cuba and Puerto Rico since the late 1990’s. Her political, organizational and educational work with hip-hop has recently been creating buzz within the Twin Cities. In 2006 emcee, singer and songwriter Maria Isa joined Emetrece Productions to produce and promote her music both locally and throughout the Caribbean. Maria's participation through 2008, when she independently founded SotaRico, was instrumental in the expansion of Emetrece Productions from an 'edutainment' audio-visual production company to currently functioning as an independent music label. |
