M. RIVIERE
Anthropologist & Audiovisual Producer

Anthropologist Melisa Rivière received her Ph.D. in 2010 as an ICGC MacArthur Fellow from the University of Minnesota conducting research on the globalization of hip-hop and its local expressions. Her dissertation titled “Son Dos Alas (They Are Two Wings): A Multimedia Ethnography of Hip-Hop Between Cuba and Puerto Rico,” proposes hip-hop as an avenue for the study of social behavior and media as a “place” for contemporary anthropological inquiry. Dr. Rivière has published portions of her research in academic journals and popular culture magazines including In The House Magazine, Revista Movimiento, Urban Move Magazine, Public Art Review, Bloomsbury’s Encyclopedia of Popular Music, and the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. Beyond her literary contributions, Dr. Riviere’s multimedia ethnographic works have received various forms of recognition. The title track of her dissertation, “Son Dos Alas,” appears in the album ‘The Underdog’ by recording artist Tego Calderón published by Atlantic Records, the documentary film she produced about women in hip-hop titled “B-Girl Be” was showcased at the Langston Hughes Film Festival, and her music video for the song “Los Pelos” by rap duo Obsesión obtained the Cuban Lucas award.

Dr. Rivière has collaborated with scholars, musicians, and filmmakers between the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico for over a decade. She engaged with the communities most relevant to her research at the Asociación Hermanos Saíz (Hermanos Saíz Association) and the Agencia Cubana de Rap (Cuban Agency for Rap; ICM) where she has offered lectures and workshops. In the Twin Cities, she taught at Hamline University and the University of Minnesota, and co-founded the international B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop annual summit with Intermedia Arts.

Born in the United States to parents from Argentina, Dr. Rivière self identifies as a bilingual and bicultural Latina. Currently Dr. Rivière serves as an Academic Director for World Learning’s SIT Study Abroad. In this role she administrates a study abroad program made up of a prominent team of scholars, introducing undergraduates to studying abroad and reinvesting her experiences in a new generation of global leaders.
